What: Wolves have broken through the camp barriers!
When: Late Wednesday January 29 into early morning on January 30
Where: Various camp locations.
Why: Some canines think they can show Camp Half-Blood who's boss.

It starts with a scream.

The evening harpies, better known as camp's alert system for kids who are out past curfew, have some news for everyone, flying through the camp and shrieking through cabin doors to wake everyone up if they're asleep. (Unless, of course, you're untrained and too young or incapable of fighting tonight. Demeter cabin will be your place of refuge.) After the first call to duty, campers have risen to the occasion with their various plans and promises, patrolling the border and building weapons specifically for their new enemies. The Full Moon passed with only a few howls, much to the surprise of many.

No, these wolves have other plans for the New Moon. Aligned with Gaea and followers of Lycaron, they're a group of six renegades looking for a show and perhaps a tasty snack. One of them just so happens to be in the business of fussing with the Mist, undoing someone's hard work to let in her comrades.

They've got bared teeth, blood on their nails, and a penchant for chaos. Camp, it's time to wake up.

[unstinting]

[It would be a relief to actually do some real fighting and tangle with the wolves, but Alcuin doesn't trust his mental state or his focus, after the disaster that was today. Instead, he's up on the roof of one of the cabins, bow strung and ready, armed with silver-tipped arrows as he keeps an eye out for any wolves who have made it this far in.]

[She's still moving from place to place, not staying still, making sure every inch of her camp, if she can help it, is protected. This is her home. These intruders will not survive.

She's got another full quiver, and she quickly runs it over from the forges to Aphrodite cabin, calling up to Alcuin.]

I have a special delivery for you.

[unstinting]

Dany! Thank you.

[He slides down the roof and lets down the rope he used to climb up- he's really glad for the training he's been doing now- before he slides down. He hasn't heard any fighting too nearby, but he's still moving quickly.]

How are things looking?

[pyrkagia]

Consider it a gift from a friend. And a precaution. We're going to need it.

[She looks around again, scratching at her head and running her hand through a loosening braid just once. She feels her skin beginning to heat up, her heart beginning to pound.]

I haven't encountered any in the main area yet, but the borders seem chaotic.

[unstinting]

[Alcuin slings the quiver over his shoulder and nods.]

Is there any idea of how many? It can't be a full-scale invasion...

[He hopes not, but maybe the werewolves were just the forward scouts.]

[pyrkagia]

The word is - there aren't too many. Four to six, if anything.

[She rubs her hand on the side of her skirt, trying to keep calm.]

But it definitely feels like one.

[unstinting]

That's still too many.

[Sure, there are a lot more campers, but not all of them are fighters.]

[pyrkagia]

My thoughts exactly. They need to be cut down.

[unstinting]

Don't let me keep you from getting out there and doing more cutting. I wish I was fit to do some myself.

[pyrkagia]

You should come with me.

[She stares him down, the fire in her eyes only getting hotter.]

Watch my back from a long range.

[unstinting]

[Alcuin glances around the cabin area, considering it. There are other people watching it- he wasn't assigned here, he can move if he thinks he'll be more use elsewhere.]

If you trust my aim that much, all right.

[pyrkagia]

I trust no one's aim more.

[She glances around as well, just keeping her eyes peeled for something - anything.]

I'm going to find Lydia, or Enjolras. We work well together.

[unstinting]

All right.

[He might be a bit awkward about seeing Lydia, but it's nothing that can't be handled. They didn't exactly fight, after all, and of course he'd have her back too.]

And thank you. I appreciate your confidence.

[pyrkagia]

I'm not sure where I'll find her.

[But she's uncurling her whip again, watching both their backs. She's got to be always on her guard, right now.]

[Hephaistion isn't avoiding combat, but he's sticking near the cabins and the center of camp for the moment just in case anything gets this far. For all anyone knew, the attack at the borders could be a distraction and not the main attack. Someone had to be prepared for that, just in case.

And because he's hanging back and keeping a watchful eye, he spies Alcuin on the rooftop. He flashes his shield to get his attention. All is quiet here so far.]

[unstinting]

[Alcuin waves a hand in response, pale enough to stand out in the dark. Nothing's gotten close to the cabins for him to see, and he's been watching. He craves some action, even knowing that discretion is the better part of valour. It's not that he wants things to go wrong... not really. He just wants to fight.]

[somatophylax]

[He draws close to where Alcuin is perched so he doesn't have to talk quite as loudly to be heard. Werewolves supposedly had keen hearing, so it probably didn't matter, but]

From the ground, it seems to be clear this far inside camp. Anything from where you're standing?

[unstinting]

Nothing. [He manages to keep the disappointment out of his voice. He's pretty sure Hephaistion would judge him.]

I'm sure they'll be held at the border- we'd surely be hearing more fighting if the invasion was large.

[somatophylax]

['Judge' would be too strong a word, but no news is better than bad news.]

From what few reports I've heard, there aren't many attackers. It seems that most of the camp has gone to face them.

[He glances around, straining to hear anything] Mind if I join you up there for a moment?

[unstinting]

It's a big roof and I wouldn't mind the company.

[He slides down to the edge to drop the end of the rope he climbed up down to Hephaistion.]

Yeah, things seem quiet here. Most of the noncombatants are in Demeter Cabin, I think.

[somatophylax]

[He takes the rope and climbs up quickly, pulling it back up behind him.]

Demeter Cabin has their own personal guard, thank the gods, and a few others keeping watch besides. It's a comfort.

[he breaks from scanning the new view of the camp to glance over at Alcuin] As is having eyes up here. Just in case something happens, something breaks through, if the force is all forward, defense is key.

[unstinting]

[Alcuin's smile is weak, but real.] And I'll be able to see things coming from the forest sooner than someone on the ground. Any extra time could mean a lot.

[somatophylax]

Exactly. [he puts a hand on Alcuin's shoulder, returning the smile briefly] If I recall correctly, you're a pretty good shot. If I'm on the ground, the backup is comforting.

Still, there's no movement this far inward. That's something to be grateful for. [He turns in a circle, eyes sweeping for trouble. He doesn't regret his decision to hang back, but the waiting is difficult.]
