Who: The entire camp + special guests.
What: Wolves have broken through the camp barriers!
When: Late Wednesday January 29 into early morning on January 30
Where: Various camp locations.
Why: Some canines think they can show Camp Half-Blood who's boss.

It starts with a scream.

The evening harpies, better known as camp's alert system for kids who are out past curfew, have some news for everyone, flying through the camp and shrieking through cabin doors to wake everyone up if they're asleep. (Unless, of course, you're untrained and too young or incapable of fighting tonight. Demeter cabin will be your place of refuge.) After the first call to duty, campers have risen to the occasion with their various plans and promises, patrolling the border and building weapons specifically for their new enemies. The Full Moon passed with only a few howls, much to the surprise of many.

No, these wolves have other plans for the New Moon. Aligned with Gaea and followers of Lycaron, they're a group of six renegades looking for a show and perhaps a tasty snack. One of them just so happens to be in the business of fussing with the Mist, undoing someone's hard work to let in her comrades.

They've got bared teeth, blood on their nails, and a penchant for chaos. Camp, it's time to wake up.

Sky wandered the cabins in search of creatures that managed to bypass the defenses. She was armed with a rather large sword, edged in sharp silver with a silver tip for slashing and stabbing. The sword was practically goofy in size, meant for a boy a foot taller than her. She was done in the forges for now, unlike her brother she was more than capable in a fight if not by training then by pure might.

She was, for all intensive purposes, a weapon herself. Durable and dangerous if given a task, for now her task was to kill any werewolf she met. Defend the cabins, and be there to protect her friends in the 'Babysitter Cabin.' Sky had no problem with this mission, anything that threatened her friends would find out exactly how strong she was.

Hephaistion had never met Sky before nor knew anything about her more than vague recognition, but they were patrolling the same area, and that sword carried by someone her size was a bit difficult to miss.

He signaled her with a flash of his shield as he approached, and he didn't speak until he was near so he didn't have to raise his voice. "It's been clear so far back that way," he indicated the way that he'd come from. "Have you seen anything?"

"Eight cabins, two trees, and four arrows," Sky answered cheerfully, her answer coming out mechanically and without much fanfare as she listed out totally harmless objects. "But if you mean threats, no, nothing like that."

She was a bit sad her sensor-net idea wasn't completed yet, but with the sudden requirement of weapon adjustments to fight enemies immune to gold and bronze she was put to different tasks. She didn't seem to be at all concerned in this situation and carried an inhuman confidence. "I wonder if I'll have to fight for real, I've never been in any real combat. Just the practice ones they hold for the demigods."

Blinking at the literal answer, Hephaistion almost smiled at her cheerfulness. What a different reaction than anyone else he'd run into. Somehow, it broke some of his nervousness. He was still alert and on-edge, but somehow this little bit of obviousness brought him back into focus. No threats here yet in her rounds either. That was good to hear.

"If we're lucky, the combat won't come this far inside camp. It being peaceful here means the ones who don't want to fight are safe." He tilted his head to one side slightly. "What's your name?"

"I don't think luck will have much to do with it, it depends on if the forward lines of defense are efficient enough to completely halt the werewolves," as a machine, Sky didn't view luck as luck, but as a margin for error in all statistical models. No matter how accurate the math was, there was always a chance for things to go... differently.

"Sky, Sky Smith. Leo named me," Sky looked at him a moment, "You're one of the children of Athena. One of Annabeth's siblings."

[personal profile] somatophylax 2014-01-30 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hephaistion nodded in confirmation of her assessment. "You are right. It does depend on the abilities of the forward lines, but there is always a chance of the enemy getting past. It is good that you are on guard."

"I am a son of Athena, yes. My name is Hephaistion. It is a pleasure to meet you, Sky." Even given the circumstances, that is. He turned away for a moment to listen. He was still trying to keep watch, but as a flaw, the question burned him. "Leo named you?"

"Hephaestus forgot to when he made me, so Leo gave me my name when I woke up." It's hard to tell if Sky is purposefully obtuse about her lack of humanity, or just absolutely bare bones literal when asked questions. Which makes the right question hard to ask.

"It is nice to meet you too. I've never seen a werewolf before, I wonder how different they are from normal species of wolves."

[personal profile] somatophylax 2014-01-31 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
The very literal answer to his question, in this case, provided exactly the answer that Hephaistion was looking for. More or less. Now was not the time for an in-depth conversation. That should be saved for another time.

"I haven't ever seen one either." Hephaistion spoke to her in a low voice, but turned to strain his eyes and ears to keep on-guard. "But I've read that they are bigger than normal wolves. Stronger, faster, more clever," he lifted the tip of his sword, "and more resilient. So really, very unlike normal wolves at all."

It's strange for Sabrina at first, to watch this. She smells them, well- at least one of them. The boy smells lively, healthy, delicious and all she wants to do is chomp on his beautiful skin and bring him back to Lycaeon.

But the girl...there's no human scent about her. Her scent is...oily, dark. She's not sure what to make of it - she's not sure what to make of this at all. And she has a soft spot, such a soft spot for children.

Spare the child, snag the boy, she thinks, as she runs full speed at the two.

Sky started to open her mouth and respond to Hephaistion, but pauses, turns and watches the wolf make a straight run for them. She's too close to a cabin wall to draw properly, the sword's length proving to be a disservice at the moment. Still, she is not without alternative plans. She's been studying, and while it's not very like a wolf at all, it is moving, so it has joints.

Once the wolf moves close enough she aims a punch for it's shoulderblade without a moment's hesitation. She doesn't looked bothered by the attempt, and she hits with the raw power of someone much larger and weightier than she is. And she's fast, accurate, and merciless. "I would really rather you run away now!"

There was barely a moment after Hephaistion's words before they found themselves in combat. Sky managed to react before he did, and her power surprised him. (It probably surprised the shewolf, too.) As Sky's hit landed, Hephaistion readied his shield and lunged forward, using his not inconsiderable body weight to slam into the wolf he'd hoped had been caught off-balance.

Hephaistion didn't really have time to verify how the wolf took the hit, but he hoped to be able to knock her far enough away to give Sky the space to draw her weapon. However, it left him very close to the wolf herself.

"Really don't care what you'd 'rather' me do, little princess." Even when the girl swings at her and she lets out a whine, she still manages a biting retort. Well, if the little girl's going to give her attitude? She'll give it right back - soft spots for kids gone in an instant and letting the wolf take over. She's knocked down by Hephaistion's blow, of course, but she's agile. She can take it. Quickly, she gets back up as he spaces himself out from Sky, lunging at Hephaistion with a snarl, hoping she'll knock him down.

"I think you should, if you don't leave I'll have to kill you." Sky moved to better draw her sword. She held the sword comfortably in one hand, unphased by the weight. She is phased by the fact that Hephaistion is between them, making it hard for her to safely swing the thing. "You care about that, right?"

This means she has to hold until Hephaistion gets out of the way, or pushes the wolf off. She edged closer so that she's ready to attack when she sees her opening. That textbook said organics needed their fluids were important, that should help right?

The wolf's recovery was a lot faster than he was expecting. Hephaistion caught the full impact of her lunge with is shield. He's not quite down, but it dropped him to one knee and severely weakened his shield arm. It did however put him less in in Sky's way. "I think you should listen to the young lady, wolf. Run away. Leave our camp. Or suffer for it." Did he believe the wolf would listen? Of course not, but he was hoping to keep her attention to give Sky a better chance to swing.

"I wouldn't listen to her if she paid me. Kids should respect their elders," she snarls, standing her ground, watching Sky and Hephaistion as he's knocked back. The little one's pulling out her sword, of course, but she can take it. Sabrina paws the ground for a second before striking out again, this time towards Sky.

"Why would I pay you? You'll be dead soon." Sky lashed with her sword the moment the wolf was in range of the tip. Measure exact to her mechanical eyes. Letting the momentum flow she continued to spin and aim her sword, whipping her head around to spot squarely on the wolf. Meaning to drive her back or slash through her. Whichever came first.

Sky put herself between Hephaistion and the wolf, she was stronger, more durable, and better armed. She was the proper opponent for this wolf, based on her speed and strength.

As part of him being a son of Athena, Hephaistion didn't like not to know things. He couldn't predict that a simple lunge from the wolf would re-injure his shoulder; he didn't anticipate how quick the wolf would be; and he didn't realize that this young girl was clearly a better match for the wolf than he was. The gods gave them each different powers, and Sky had the advantage in this fight. She was between him and the wolf now, so he held his ground as her backup, ready for if the wolf provided him an opening.
